Zweisprachiges Transkript, Wortschatzliste und Übungen als PDF

Moin moin, liebe Leute! Moin moin, dear people! Welcome to a new episode of Deutsches Geplapper, the podcast for real German.

Und ich heiße auch dich willkommen, Amelie. Schön, dass du wieder da bist. And I also welcome you, Amelie. It’s nice that you’re back.

Danke schön, Flemming. Moin! Thank you, Flemming. Moin!

Moin! Moin! Guys, last week we talked about the topic of Carnival and Fasching and about the absolute state of emergency that has prevailed in some parts of Germany over the last few days.

And especially about the consumption that simply sets in during these days and which many people practice beyond measure.

Now, today, is the start of Lent, the complete contrast to the Cologne Carnival or to Carnival, to Fasching in general.

Now there are many people in Germany who extremely stop this consumption. Not everyone does that, I think, but a lot of people, right?

Yes, yes, indeed. So I think it’s become quite a thing now, it’s getting bigger and bigger, I have the feeling, also for various reasons.

But we can talk about that again in a moment. But I think, yes, it’s increasing, but by far not everyone is doing it.

Genau, genau. Exactly, exactly. That’s why today we’re first going to talk briefly about the topic of Lent, but we mainly want to use this episode today for one topic, namely to talk about the alcohol consumption of Germans.

Yes, how much do Germans actually drink? How important is the topic of alcohol for Germans? How did that even come about? What cultural and historical roots does alcohol have in Germany anyway?

I mean, anyone among you who has dealt a little with the topic or with the German population, with German society, knows that the topic of alcohol somehow belongs to it like butter on bread.

And that is exactly the mystery we are getting to the bottom of today.

So, Amelie, die Fastenzeit. Was können wir da sagen? Also heute geht es los, 40 Tage, heute ist Aschermittwoch. So, Amelie, Lent. What can we say about that? Well, it starts today, 40 days, today is Ash Wednesday.

This period of Lent lasts 40 days, it always goes until Holy Saturday, the Saturday before Easter.

Genau. Exactly.

And an important piece of info that both of us didn’t know: Sundays don’t count in this context. So Sundays are excluded from this period of Lent.

Was? Wie jetzt? Yes, I didn’t know that either. I read it again during my research and I was like: Huh? What? How now?

Yes, yes, same for me. The question now is: Why are we doing this today?

Well, I read that 30 to 40 percent of Germans – that really surprised me – 30 to 40 percent of Germans actually actively give something up.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be alcohol; it can also be sugar, it can also be consumption nowadays, like social media or something like that.

Genau. Exactly. I think that’s the modern form of it a bit, right? This renunciation of consumption, like giving up social media for example, or not shopping, or I don’t know what.

Genau. Exactly. Some also abstain from sex for 40 days; that’s also this topic of celibacy/abstinence.

Meat and coffee are also very classic things, or sweets, which people give up.

Also alles, was eigentlich nicht so gut ist in übertriebenem Maße für den Menschen, darauf wird verzichtet. So everything that is actually not so good for people in excessive amounts is being given up.

And now we come to, let’s draw a connection to the topic of alcohol. Especially during this time, it’s a topic for many people where they say: Okay, I’m going to cut back a bit here.

And we asked ourselves the question: How much do Germans actually drink? What’s the thing with Germans and alcohol?

We are, I think, or not I think, we also found in our research – you don’t actually have to research for long for that – we are actually one of the nations, one of the societies in the world that is really at the top.

There will be some figures on the topic later, but we are already playing in the major leagues.

Leider ja. Unfortunately, yes.

And that’s really a thing, it’s quite extreme.

Das ist krass, oder? Ich finde auch. It’s extreme, right? I think so too.

Even though one somehow knew it, when I researched a bit more and read it again, in black and white, I thought: Man, that’s really unpleasant for Germans, I think.

Yes, yes. And I looked up how much it actually is per capita, per liter – no, not per capita, per liter, but per capita, per year.

Reinen Alkohols. And it is actually 10 to 11 liters of pure alcohol. Pure alcohol.

We’re not talking about 10 to 11 liters of beer; that wouldn’t be much per year. But pure alcohol, 10 to 11 liters per year, that’s a whole lot.

As mentioned, Germany is in the top group worldwide.

And we actually have 1.6 million alcohol-dependent people in Germany.

We are 85 million inhabitants more or less, 86. And out of those, 1.6 million who are dependent, who have really developed an addiction, that’s quite extreme.

I even read something about 2.2 million in Germany. But I guess the numbers vary.

Surely not every alcohol-dependent person is recorded in the official statistics.

Eben, genau. Aber das ist schon doll. Exactly, precisely. But that’s quite a lot.

It’s crazy. Either way, it’s just incredibly much and really frightening, I think.

Well, it is, and with these figures we’ve only just spoken about those who actually meet the criteria for addiction.

That means there are very, very many people who are just below that and are far from being included.
