Moah, heute habe ich, kam kein Wort aus meinem Mund. Heute habe ich nur Blödsinn geredet. Heute hat nichts funktioniert und dabei lerne ich doch schon so lange Deutsch. Moah, today not a single word came out of my mouth. Today I just talked nonsense. Nothing worked today, even though I’ve been learning German for so long.

Was hast du damit gemacht? Ich bin mir ganz sicher, du hattest solche Tage. What did you do about it? I’m quite sure you had days like that.

Ich konnte nicht mal das einfachste Gespräch führen. I couldn’t even hold the simplest conversation.

Ich habe dich noch nie einen Grammatikfehler machen hören. I have never heard you make a grammar mistake.

Ich habe noch nie gehört, an deinem Akzent, dass du aus aus den USA kommst. I have never heard in your accent that you come from the USA.

Und dann muss ich entweder sagen, es tut mir leid, ich verstehe nicht, oder could you speak in English? And then I have to either say, I’m sorry, I don’t understand, or could you speak in English?

Ich mache es richtig, aber ich muss wirklich noch mich anstrengen, dass ich es richtig mache. I am doing it correctly, but I still really have to make an effort to do it right.

Es kommt noch nicht komplett ohne Anstrengung aus mir heraus. It is not yet coming out of me completely without effort.

Und es floss einfach aus mir heraus. Mehrere Wörter. Und ich so, wow. And it just flowed out of me. Several words. And I was like, wow.

Ich habe keine Zeit zum Lernen. Ich habe, ich bin unmotiviert, ich vergesse immer wieder neue Wörter. I don’t have time to study. I am unmotivated, I keep forgetting new words.

Du musst übertreiben, ne? Du musst versuchen, deutscher als der Deutsche zu klingen. You have to exaggerate, right? You have to try to sound more German than the German.

Ich habe meinen Freund und Kollegen David von LinguaThor interviewt. David ist Amerikaner aus San Diego in Kalifornien und er hat es in wenigen Jahren von A1 auf C2 Niveau geschafft. I interviewed my friend and colleague David from LinguaThor. David is American from San Diego, California, and he made it from A1 to C2 level in just a few years.

Er spricht besseres Deutsch als die meisten Deutschen. He speaks better German than most Germans.

Und im ersten Teil unseres Gesprächs ging es um die Methoden und Techniken, die er angewendet hat, um dieses Niveau zu erreichen. And the first part of our conversation was about the methods and techniques he applied to reach this level.

Heute in Teil 2 spreche ich mit ihm über die typischen Probleme, denen jeder Sprachenlernende irgendwann mal begegnet. Today in part 2, I’m talking to him about the typical problems that every language learner encounters at some point.

Also z.B., was er getan hat, wenn er neue Wörter immer wieder vergessen hat, wenn er Deutsche nicht verstehen konnte und wenn er keine Zeit oder keine Motivation zum Lernen hatte. Viel Spaß! Ja David, wenn man dich heute so sieht und vor allem Deutsch sprechen hört, dann ist es eigentlich gar nicht so richtig vorstellbar, dass du auch Momente des Scheiterns erlebt hast auf deinem Weg zu D1 Deutsch, wie du gesagt hast, ja? Yes, David, when you see you today, and especially hear you speaking German, it is actually not really imaginable that you also experienced moments of failure on your way to D1 German, as you said, right?

Also zu absolut muttersprachlichem Deutsch. Meaning, absolutely native-level German.

Ich hab dich noch nie ’n Grammatikfehler machen hören, ich hab noch nie gehört an deinem Akzent, dass du dass du aus aus den USA kommst. I have never heard you make a grammar mistake, I have never heard in your accent that you come from the USA.

Allerhöchstens wenn du mal California statt Kalifornien sagst, ja? Dann hört man’s schon raus, aber worauf ich hinaus will, man hört oder man kann sich nicht vorstellen, dass du genau mit den gleichen Problemen gekämpft hast, mit denen jeder andere Deutschlerner oder Sprachenlernende im Prinzip auch kämpfen muss, ja? At most, when you say California instead of Kalifornien, right? Then you can hear it, but what I’m getting at is that one can’t imagine that you struggled with the exact same problems that every other German learner or language learner basically has to struggle with, right?

Jetzt die große Preisfrage an dich: Habe ich damit recht oder hattest du trotzdem diese Momente des Scheiterns? Ist natürlich eine rhetorische Frage. Now the big question for you: Am I right about this, or did you still have those moments of failure? It’s a rhetorical question, of course.

Ja, natürlich, ja, ja. Also, jeder, der irgendwas gut kann, hatte sehr sehr viele Momente des Scheiterns. Yes, of course, yes, yes. So, everyone who is good at something has had very, very many moments of failure.

Du, es geht einfach gar nicht, irgendwas so gut zu lernen, dass man, ja, sich als Experten bezeichnen kann, ohne dass man halt schon sehr oft gescheitert ist. You, it’s simply impossible to learn something so well that you can, yes, call yourself an expert, without having failed very often.

Und also die hatte ich auf jeden Fall. And so I definitely had those.

Wie ich ja schon angesprochen hatte, ich habe ja zunächst einmal eigentlich keinen einzigen richtigen Satz sagen können, ne, als ich in Deutschland angekommen bin. As I had already mentioned, I couldn’t really say a single correct sentence at first, right, when I arrived in Germany.

Ich hatte sogar das Problem, dass ich ja eine einigermaßen gute Aussprache hatte, so dass die Leute ganz oft nach dem ersten Satz dachten, dass ich viel besser Deutsch kann, als ich konnte und dann aber so schnell gesprochen haben, dass ich das gar nicht mehr verstanden habe und dann muss ich entweder sagen, es tut mir leid, ich verstehe nicht oder, could you speak in English? I even had the problem that I had a reasonably good pronunciation, so people often thought after the first sentence that I could speak German much better than I actually could, and then they spoke so fast that I didn’t understand it anymore and then I had to either say, I’m sorry, I don’t understand or, could you speak in English?

Also das ja, früher war es tatsächlich bzw. ganz am Anfang, vor allem der ersten Deutschlernphase, also meiner ersten Zeit in Deutschland war es tatsächlich es ging gar nicht. So yes, in the past it was actually, or rather at the very beginning, especially during the first German learning phase, so my first time in Germany, it really didn’t work at all.

Das hat ein paar Monate gedauert, bis ich das konnte. Aber trotzdem noch mit vielen mit vielen Fehlern, ne? That took a few months until I could do that. But still with many, many mistakes, right?

Nur das was ich anders gemacht habe, wie ich schon ein bisschen angesprochen hatte, ist, dass ich tatsächlich versucht habe, aus jedem Gespräch zu lernen, etwas mitzunehmen, sodass beim nächsten Gespräch, weil wenn du etwas einmal in einem Gespräch sagst, dann ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass du das beim nächsten Mal sagen möchtest, sehr sehr hoch, ne? The only thing I did differently, as I had already mentioned a little, is that I actually tried to learn from every conversation, to take something away, so that in the next conversation, because if you say something once in a conversation, the probability that you want to say it the next time is very, very high, right?

Das heißt, es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, zu versuchen, ja, zu erkennen, was für Fehler du gemacht hast. That means it is definitely worth trying to, yes, recognize what mistakes you made.

Wenn wenn natürlich, wenn sie nicht angesprochen werden von deinem Gegenüber und ja, und dann zu versuchen, beim nächsten Mal, das bedeutet nicht, dass du es schaffst, dass es dir gelingt, ne? If, of course, they are not addressed by your counterpart and yes, and then try to, the next time, that doesn’t mean that you succeed, that you manage it, right?

Ganz oft es gibt ja unterschiedliche Phasen der der Meisterung, ne? Very often there are different phases of mastery, right?

Normalerweise redet man von vier Phasen, ne? Es ist halt das unbewusste Nicht-Können, das bewusste Nicht-Können, das bewusste Können und dann das unbewusste Können, ne? Mhm. Normally one talks about four phases, right? It’s the unconscious incompetence, the conscious incompetence, the conscious competence, and then the unconscious competence, right? Mhm.
